Drugs are chemicals that affect the body and brain. Different drugs can have different effects. Some effects of drugs include health consequences that are long-lasting and permanent. They can even continue after a person has stopped taking the substance.
There are many ways a person can take drugs, including injection, inhalation and ingestion. The effects of the drug on the body can depend on how the drug is delivered. For example, by injecting the drugs directly into the bloodstream has an immediate impact, while ingestion has a delayed effect. But all misused drugs affect the brain. They cause large amounts of dopamine, a neuro-transmitter that helps regulate our emotions, motivation and feelings of pleasure, to flood the brain and produce a “high.” Eventually, drugs can change how the brain works and interfere with a person’s ability to make choices, leading to intense cravings and compulsive drug use. Over time, this behavior can turn into a substance dependency, or drug addiction.
Substance abuse is a worldwide problem which have been creating physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual problems for millions of people, and Nepal is no exception. Over the last few years, growing drug use and alcoholism has been a increasing concern to the society in Nepal. Since Nepal is a third world country, it has been chosen as a transit point to traffic narcotic drugs and precursor chemicals to neighbouring countries. Now, we are able to find many drugs which we had only heard about. According to a survey report prepared by the Ministry of Home Affairs and Central Bureau of Statistics, the number of Hard Drug Users (HDU) in Nepal has increased by 86% over the period of 6 years. The study was conducted in 18 districts including 26 municipalities spread over five development regions of Nepal. The survey shows maximum number of HDU first started with a cigarette and 96.5% were students when they first used.
Today, more than 7 million people suffer from a drug disorder, and one in four deaths results from illicit drug use. In fact, more deaths, illnesses and disabilities are associated with drug abuse than any other preventable health condition. People suffering from drug and alcohol addiction also have a higher risk of unintentional injuries, accidents and domestic violence incidents.
So, to tackle this problems from our ends, Peace Home Rehabilitation Center has been providing holistic treatment approach and psychotherapy treatment to victims of drug addiction. It provides a friendly atmosphere to bring physical, mental, emotional, spiritual changes in the behavior of the substance users so that they can lead a successful life ahead. It hopes to instill social values, norms and responsibilities to the youths, the pillars of the nation.
